Spill Deck Bladder Systems Ireland: Self-Contained EPA-Compliant Drum Storage
The Ultra-Spill Deck Bladder System is a low-profile, polyethylene spill containment deck featuring a hidden 66-gallon auto-deploying bladder. It meets EPA and SPCC spill containment regulations without needing to be connected to other units. Available in 1, 2, and 4-drum configurations. SSI Environmental supplies and supports this product across Ireland.
Hidden containment bladder automatically unfurls to capture large spills or drum leaks.
How do you take the lowest profile spill containment pallet / deck on the market, drastically reduce its footprint and remain in compliance with the EPA and SPCC spill containment regulations? You don’t.
Well.. you didn’t. Not until we introduced the Ultra-Spill Deck Bladder Systems to the market that is. In our never ending quest for new and improved products, we looked at the already popular Ultra-Spill Decks and asked ourselves how we could make a single Spill Deck (1, 2 or 4-drum) EPA and SPCC compliant without being connected to other Spill Decks (the standard Spill Decks use bulkhead fittings to connect to other units, allowing them to share containment).
The addition of a rolled up 66-gallon bladder made this possible. By adding this to any Spill Deck, we can provide a self-contained deck that meets the Federal Government’s spill containment requirements.
Storing hazardous chemicals or fuels in drums presents a real compliance challenge on Irish industrial sites. Under EPA Integrated Pollution Control (IPC) licensing and the European Communities (Environmental Liability) Regulations, businesses must demonstrate adequate secondary spill containment — but traditional spill pallets take up significant floor space and require bulkhead connections between units to meet volumetric compliance requirements.
The Ultra-Spill Deck Bladder System from SSI Environmental solves this completely. With a hidden rolled 66-gallon bladder built into the deck, each unit becomes fully self-contained and regulation-compliant — no connections to other pallets required.
What Is a Spill Deck Bladder System?
A spill deck bladder system is a type of secondary spill containment unit that combines a low-profile polyethylene deck with an integrated hidden containment bladder. During normal operation, small leaks and drips are captured in the deck’s sump. In the event of a catastrophic drum failure, the bladder automatically unfurls to provide the full 110% secondary containment volume required by regulation — all within the unit’s own footprint.
This makes it the ideal spill containment solution for:
-
Industrial warehouses and chemical storage areas with limited floor space
-
Outdoor fuel or lubricant storage where a compact, compliant unit is needed
-
Sites requiring standalone, non-interconnected drum containment compliance
-
Businesses operating under Irish EPA IPC licences or COMAH regulations
How Does the Bladder System Work?
Under normal conditions, the bladder remains stored (rolled) beneath the deck grating. The deck sump captures everyday drips and minor spills. If a drum ruptures or develops a major leak, the liquid contacts the bladder material, triggering automatic deployment — the bladder unfurls and fills to contain the entire spill volume. No manual intervention is required.
Product Comparison: Bladder System vs Standard Spill Pallet
| Feature | Standard Spill Pallet | Bladder System |
|---|---|---|
| Floor space required | Large (must interconnect units) | Compact standalone unit |
| Deck height | Usually 9″+ (high) | Low 5¾” — safer drum loading |
| EPA/SPCC compliance | Requires linked pallets | Self-contained compliance |
| Catastrophic spill capture | Sump only | Auto-deploy 66-gallon bladder |
| Handling equipment needed | Often yes | Optional loading ramp available |
| Drum configurations | 1–4 drum options | 1, 2 and 4-drum modules |
Key Benefits for Irish Businesses
-
Meets EPA IPC licence secondary containment requirements as a standalone unit
-
Low 5¾” deck height — safe drum loading without specialist handling equipment
-
Compact footprint preserves warehouse floor space — critical for Dublin industrial units
-
Dual protection: sump captures everyday drips, bladder handles catastrophic failures
-
No bulkhead connections needed between units — flexible site layout
-
Optional polyethylene loading ramp for additional handling safety
Regulatory Compliance in Ireland
Irish businesses storing chemicals, fuels, or hazardous liquids in drums are subject to the EPA’s Integrated Pollution Control (IPC) licensing system, the Environmental Liability Regulations (S.I. No. 547 of 2008), and in some cases the Seveso III Directive (COMAH). All require evidence of secondary spill containment capable of holding 110% of the largest container or 25% of total stored volume.
The Ultra-Spill Deck Bladder System meets the US equivalent regulation (SPCC, 40 CFR 264.175) and is designed to satisfy these volumetric containment requirements as a standalone unit — making Irish EPA compliance documentation straightforward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a spill deck bladder system?
A spill deck bladder system combines a low-profile polyethylene deck with a hidden rolled bladder. The sump handles everyday spills; the auto-deploying bladder captures catastrophic drum leaks — making the unit fully self-contained and regulation compliant.
Is this product compliant with Irish EPA regulations?
Yes. It meets SPCC and EPA 40 CFR 264.175 volumetric containment standards and supports compliance under Irish IPC licensing and the Environmental Liability Regulations.
What sizes are available?
1-drum, 2-drum and 4-drum modules are available. An optional polyethylene loading ramp can be added to any module.
