Most Irish workplaces that store or handle oil, fuel or chemicals need spill kits - driven by IPC/IE licence conditions, ISO 14001, EPA and local-authority requirements, and insurer demands. There is no single 'one size' rule: the right kit depends on the volume and type of liquids on site, where they're stored, and the distance to the nearest drain or watercourse.

Do I need a spill kit?

If your site stores or uses oils, fuels or chemicals - from a single generator's diesel tank to a full chemical store - the practical and usually the compliance answer is yes. Spill kits are how you meet the duty to prevent pollution and respond to a spill before it reaches a drain or the ground. The requirement is rarely a single named law; it comes from several directions at once.

What drives the requirement in Ireland

What a compliant spill kit contains

A spill kit is a set of equipment to contain and clean up a spill quickly. A typical kit holds absorbent socks or booms (to surround and contain the spill), absorbent pads (to soak it up), loose absorbent granules, disposal bags and ties, and instructions - packaged in a bin, bag or wheeled container. What size spill kit do I need?

Size the kit to the credible worst-case spill, not the average. Consider the largest single container or tank on site, how fast a spill could travel to a drain or watercourse, and how many response points you need (a large or spread-out site needs several kits, plus vehicle-mounted or wall-mounted units at key points).
